Web 1.0,2.0,3.0 and beyond
Here on the Web, just like any other industry, we like our special terms. You’ve probably come across Web 1.0, Web 2.0 and now Web 3.0. If not, that’s what I want to try and explain now, so that when you get caught up in those conversations, you’ve got a basic understanding of it all. This way you’re not going to be blinded by the smoke and mirror that some techies like to throw at people.
Let’s start with Web 1.0. So, when the Web started it was about sharing information. Web 2.0 moved it up a level and made the Web more focused on interaction. People could then share their information and have others interact with it at the same time. An example of this would be how people can now make comments on blogs, or they can get involved in an online competition. So Web 2.0 is all about interaction. You can think about Social Media when you think about Web 2.0, because Social Media is very Web 2.0 based.
So Web 1.0 is all about sharing information, Web 2.0 is all about creating interaction, so what about Web 3.0? Well Web 3.0, in essence, is about the computer doing smart stuff. An example of this is www.amazon.com. On Amazon.com, what you’re seeing is that the server that is running the website is actually choosing recommendations for you to purchase, based on data it has gathered from you. You’re not necessarily interacting with it, but the Web server is interacting with you. It’s not just sharing information about everything that Amazon has got to offer, it’s choosing things intelligently on your behalf and making recommendations for you and that is Web 3.0.
If you want to simplify it, think of like this. Web 1.0: it’s about sharing information, it’s one way. Web 2.0: this is about interaction, its two-way. Web 3.0: this is about interaction and the Web server also being pretty smart. Therefore, it is three way. The person delivering the content, the computer and the server involved in delivering the content and you, the customer.
The reason you want to know that information about Web 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 is just so that you can talk with confidence and knowledge when you’re with the Web Developer and the techies. It is important that you understand where we’re things are going with web technology and media technology. These days the more interaction you can have with your visitors the better. If you can help them by suggesting things to them using smart technology then that’s even better. Just remember that what you are trying to achieve is much more important than the words that are used to describe it.
